More than30 representatives from journalists and media representatives from major news channels in Cambodia, government communications and media officers from relevant ministries have been invited to join this training to strengthen their awareness, understanding and capacity to report climate information and analysis in a way that can be easily understood and used by a range of potential users.
“Disaster does affect a lot on people’s lives and it is very important to train media representatives to deliver a better and qualify information to people to be incautious before during and after any kinds of disaster,” said Mr. Sok Sakhan, Disaster Management Manager of Caritas Cambodia. He added that media plays very important role to reduce impacts caused by the disaster.
Similarly to Mr. Sok Sakhan, Ruby Rose Policarpio, Institutional Development Specialist of RIMES said media has an important role of dissemination information to the public about weather and climate.“Media helps alerting communities to take action to save lives, in view of impending hazard and the actions they can take to reduce vulnerabilities and mitigate hazards,” she added.
Mr. Thach Phanarong, a reporter of Agence Kampuchea Press told that this training is very useful for him and other media representatives to disseminate fast and accurate information in order to reduce impacts of climate changes.
While the science of climate forecasting has improved over the past few decades, limited access and understanding of these forecasts by potential users (the general public, farmers, policy-makers, etc.) has tempered their utility. The media play a crucial role by making this information available and reporting it in a way that can be readily understood and used by different client groups. Climate forecasts, reported in newspaper, TV, radios, and recently through the Internet, attract considerable public interest in South East Asia.
